Our travel companions

We bought our first Africa Twin RD07 in March. The bike was partially dismantled as the previous owner wanted to do some repairs. He had already had the rims refurbished and fitted with new bearings. The tank had a large dent on the outside, but was completely rust-free on the inside. We had considered repairing the dent ourselves, but then decided to have the tank repaired and painted by a painter. As the brake callipers had already been removed, all we had to do was dismantle them, clean them in an ultrasonic bath and reassemble them with a new repair kit. We replaced the old brake lines with steel flex lines. The carburettors were also dismantled, ultrasonically cleaned and reinstalled and synchronized with a new repair kit. A few additional headlights were fitted. However, there is still a lot to be done before the start. We will of course let you know when the time comes.

We got our second Africa Twin RD07 in April 2021.

From today’s perspective, we should have opted for a different one. To date, it has cost us a lot of money and work. But we have made the best of it and when we set off in spring 2023, it will be in good condition for traveling 😉

Our bad luck actually started on the outward journey when we noticed that our car was leaking coolant.

When we got home, we realized that we were probably thinking more about the car and the loss of coolant than the bike.

Because the rear rim was totally rotten around the valve. We should have seen this immediately.

We decided to have the rim refurbished, including a new rim ring and stainless steel spokes. The bearings were also replaced.

When we removed the carburetor to clean it, it turned out that one of the fixing points had been torn off and was soldered in a makeshift manner.

Of course, this didn’t last long. As a result, the carburetor had a hole in a place where there shouldn’t actually be one.

So we had no choice but to get a new, used carburetor.

This was then ultrasonically cleaned by us, fitted with a new repair kit and synchronized.

As the AT sporadically misfired when riding and the plug connection between the alternator and regulator was a little scorched, we replaced the stator and regulator.

The installed Tommaselli handlebars were replaced with used original handlebars. We refurbished these and painted them black.

New #barkbustershandguards were fitted.

The old brake lines were replaced with braided steel brake lines.

and painstakingly removed all stickers 😉
