To see the Tabernas desert by motorcycle at our leisure, we took a paid parking space at the cool Route 66 restaurant just before Tabernas. For €10 per night, we had a secure pitch where camping is also permitted. There is a supply and disposal station. Showers and toilets are also included.
At almost 40°, everything is pretty slow and relaxed.
We got up early the next morning. It was already 25° at 7 o’clock
We had a quick breakfast and got everything ready so that we could set off on the bike before the heat came. The evening before, Alex had tested whether the KTM’s battery was full. It was…but when we wanted to set off this morning, it went on strike. Alex briefly hooked it up to the generator to charge it enough for the bike to start.
Once the battery was fully charged again, we had a really nice day. First we went up the mountain pass into the Sierra de los Filabres at 2168m.
The temperatures up there were pleasantly fresh at 25°.
The drive up into the Sierra de Los Filabres along the Desierto de Tabernas was beautiful with its breathtaking scenery.
We continued on the larger roads through the Tabernas desert at almost 40°. At the end of the day, we decided to go to Playa El Zapillo/Almeria. A great idea to take a short trip to the sea after the many mountain villages and unbearable heat.
It was only 32° the next day 🙂 Once again we went on a motorcycle tour. This time in the other direction of the desert.
Afterwards, we went to see the original location of the famous western movie “Play me the song of death”. There are various parks and locations. We opted for the “Western Leone” park.
More than 300 feature films have been shot here since the 1950s, and not just westerns.
Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod, Für eine Handvoll Dollar, Vier Fäuste für ein Halleluja, Der Schuh des Manitu, Lawrence of Arabia, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – the list of films shot in the Tabernas desert in Andalusia in southern Spain is long. A few scenes from the Game of Thrones series were also filmed here.
It’s a shame to see how everything in Western Leone is falling into disrepair and disrepair. It would be nice to keep the buildings in their original condition.
It was a sad sight for us and the €12 entrance fee was too low. There was a small show, which we were allowed to see by chance, as we were in the salon anyway for a beer (€5 for 2 beers). We actually had a lot of fun there too. It would just have been a lot easier if Iris had understood the two cowboys.
You can book the horses in the park for half an hour for €10 to ride around the area and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Unfortunately, the horses all look very sad and each one has an open wound somewhere. Very shocking. Nobody should ride these poor animals anymore.
the church
All in all, a sad experience for all Italiano Western fans to see that it will probably not be long before you can no longer visit this location. At least that’s our personal impression. It’s nice that we were still able to see it to some extent.
The famous Mc Bain Farm, where the salon is located today.
The scenes that were filmed on this location are probably familiar to every western fan.
Wir ließen den Abend im Restaurant Route 66 bei einem Drink und Live-Musik ausklingen.
