Shortly after our trip to Namibia, we picked up our WENNE from where it was stored and were able to park it once again at our friends’ place at og_kustom to, among other things, get it ready for its vehicle inspection.
Now that Alex and our son know the best way to pull the living compartment back so we can tilt the cab, things actually went very quickly this time. So the very first thing Alex did was address the new oil leak issue. He also took care of the oil change right away. There was also some welding work to be done on the cab and the vehicle frame, as well as the thankless task of cleaning out the engine compartment and removing the oil that had accumulated there due to the leak.
In addition, he took care of a few more welding jobs on the vehicle frame and the cabin.
Since we didn’t want to start working on the living compartment until it was firmly back in place, we had the idea—while we were repeatedly waiting for the delivery of replacement parts and various supplies—to reupholster the worn headliner in the driver’s cab.
Alex had also found time to build his own version of a skylight fan. It works great!
Work inside the driver’s cab is now complete, and I was finally able to make myself useful. After Alex and our son successfully returned the living quarters to their original spot, it’s now sparkling clean again and ready to hit the road—but we’re still a long way from being ready to go.
Although we’ve installed quite a few light sources in the RV, of all places, we’re missing a bright light right at our table. At first, we didn’t think it was such a big deal. But time and again, situations arise where we’d really like to have a slightly brighter light right there. So we went ahead and made that wish come true, too.
One of the final tasks was to touch up some of the paintwork and repair a few areas of wear and tear.
We also made a few minor cosmetic improvements, such as the part of the bench backrest. All that’s missing now is our upholstery.
And last but not least, everything was thoroughly cleaned, some of it was put away again, and the place was made cozy.
Longing for Africa: So we brought a little bit of Namibia into our home 😉
In between working on the car, we also made time for our family and friends.
For now, work on WENNE is complete. We have a TÜV appointment in early August. There’s one more thing we’d like to install, but we’ll have to check with the TÜV first to make sure we don’t lose our classic car status. Depending on the outcome of that conversation, we’ll let you know—and by then we’ll probably have a better idea of when our next trip will start and where we’ll ultimately be heading.
