26-31.07.2023 “At home” Germany

We set off punctually at 5 o’clock in the morning with Iris’ parents, our “cab” and truck tractor consultant, to the vicinity of Cologne. There we visited the camper we told you about in our last post.

As you can see, with success 🙂
May we introduce “WENNE”, our new companion for our adventure.

Admittedly, it is already a bit older. So there is still some work to be done. The interior has everything we could have wished for. We didn’t really expect to find an affordable camper that would fulfill all our wishes and we would have accepted compromises.
For example, I always wanted a passageway from the driver’s cabin to the living area, a lockable toilet with separate shower would not be a must for either of us, but a dream. “WENNE” fulfills this dream. A large fixed bed was always a prerequisite for us, ideally lots of storage space, a kitchen with a gas stove, a sofa to lounge on, a dining room that can be permanently fixed, this camper offers us all that and much more.

Everything is in working order and ready for immediate use. However, it is from the eighties and not quite our style. You don’t really have to rebuild anything. Just embellish it, make it look nicer, give it your own touch. We have lots of ideas and will gradually implement them on the road in southern Europe. But before the adventure continues for us, “WENNE” first needs a thorough clean. Although the mattress in the bed is actually still good, we want to get a new, harder one. We would also like to get some materials here in Germany to embellish it. We also have a few different things to do, so we can’t estimate how long we’ll be staying in Germany. We are stressing ourselves out a bit as we really want to leave with “WENNE”. We still need to work on our patience.
We were able to take the motorhome with us on the same day. The family who sold it to us were kind enough to clear it out and get it ready for us while we were out for a bite to eat, so we didn’t have to drive the almost 550 km here again.
A big thank you also goes to Iris’ parents who drove us this long distance. We only arrived back home at night.

While Alex took care of the vehicle’s technology, removed the bike rack, inspected the outside storage compartments and their contents, had a closer look around the cabin and collected even more ideas for embellishment, I started cleaning the cab.
Once again, a big thank you goes to Iris’s dad, who, with his many years of experience as a long-distance driver, is always on hand with lots of tips and advice about the tractor unit. He was able to help us with many questions and uncertainties.

Alex sold his bike tonight with a tear in his eye and a smile on his face.

He put his heart and soul into his bike and experienced many wonderful moments with it.
But as the saying goes:
“Every ending has a new beginning”

Over the last few days, we have completely cleaned the inside of our “WENNE”

We have decided to renovate the alcove, the “bedroom” so to speak, here in Giengen. However, we didn’t expect that this ugly carpet, which is often still installed on the walls and ceiling of oldtimers, would be so terribly difficult to remove. We actually wanted to replace the entire carpet with a contemporary one. But we’ll be really happy when we’ve finally managed to remove it in the alcove only. That will have to do for now.
Unfortunately, this project is taking us a little longer than planned.

There are also a few other things we have to do in between. For example, we have now also taken care of a new family member.

We bought a KTM 390 Adventure from the KTM dealer in Krauchenwies, near Sigmaringen. You can’t do without a moped after all.

As it was a new vehicle, Alex used the time to break in the KTM. Maybe we can do the first service after 1000 km in Germany.
