16.10.-17.10.2023 Praia da Vieira de Leiria/Portugal

Before we set off this morning, we actually wanted to fill our fresh water tank completely, as our next pitch will only be a parking lot without service, we would like to have a full water tank with us.
The big downside is that no water came despite inserting a token. There was absolutely no possibility of fresh water, apart from the taps where everyone cleans their toilets and the opening is pushed all the way up. We really didn’t want to use that, especially as there was no possibility of connecting a hose and filling a 120-liter tank with a watering can, which is not really necessary if there is another way.
We knew that there was an Intermarché with service for motorhomes where we wanted to shop on the way to the next pitch. The only one in the area. So we decided to use it.

The first thing we did was to go food shopping for the next few days. This dried, salted cod is a delicacy in Portugal and is just lying around unpackaged in stores everywhere. We haven’t tried any yet, somehow we don’t feel quite right about it.
Afterwards we used the gas station next door. In Portugal, you don’t fill up when you have to, but when a cheap petrol station comes along. The diesel here for 1.66€/l is almost unbeatable.

There was a DIY store near the fresh water station. Alex said I could have a look to see if he had anything useful while he was filling the water tank. Of course, he didn’t have to tell me twice.

It was a great DIY store. I also found what I was looking for. A black spray paint for the heater panel and an insect screen for the door, as the one still hanging on from the previous owners was already full of holes.

We hadn’t been driving long when we were greeted by a completely different landscape. On one side dunes, on the other side (unfortunately not visible in the pictures), completely burnt forests.

There are many paths in the dunes that can be driven on. Right down to the sea. The sandy tracks are probably only suitable for good off-roaders.

When we arrived at our destination for today, we ventured right to the front, even though it was currently very stormy and we had no shelter. But there is a great view.
It is a parking lot that allows motorhomes to stay here day and night. Without any service. We have prepared ourselves for this. Only our electricity is a little weak, so now it’s time to save power.

There are actually a few large hotels in this currently deserted town. The promenade is completely geared towards tourism. Everything is closed in the low season. The beach is wonderful. You could go for lovely walks if the weather was a bit better. A big highlight here is a water park, right between the apartment buildings.

The night was as expected. We were able to fall asleep well for the first 2 hours or so. We listened to the wind and WENNE practically rocked us to sleep. Then came very strong gusts of wind. It felt like WENNE was driving on very bad roads. It rocked and the cabin made the same strange noises as during the journey. When it started to rain shortly afterwards, sleeping was out of the question. Then, at around 5 o’clock, we fell asleep again.

As it had rained and stormed almost exclusively today, we were busy. Now nobody can see into the living area from the driver’s cab and the curtain also protects us from the cold and the heat from the driver’s cab. A big thank you to Iris’ mom, who sewed 2 of the 4 curtains that we no longer needed.

We only ventured out very briefly today 😉

The view from our camper is phenomenal. Tomorrow, however, we’re moving on.
