Although it was a bit windy at the end of the ride today in the mountains of Periana and the surrounding area, the ride was pleasantly stress-free.
A short stop at this beautiful place was a must.
The Embalse Los Bermejales:
As the route to our destination was almost the same as on Thursday, there was again only agriculture, nature and nothing else far and wide. Except for this one hotel, where we had already taken a break on Thursday. This time we also used it for a short stopover.
A few more impressions from the trip today.
When we arrived at our destination of Periana, we contacted the landlord of the house where we would be spending the next 11 days, as agreed.
Arrived at our accommodation.
Luca has furnished this house exceptionally and lovingly. So beautiful and clean.
We will definitely feel very comfortable here.
Shopping in these many hidden, small alleys and the many stairs everywhere is more relaxed on foot than by motorcycle 😉
Never before have we seen so many cats in one pile.
Most of the cats here don’t have it very good. However, volunteers walk through the village every day to feed them.
Periana is a small municipality in the province of Malaga with approx. 3234 inhabitants,
at 550 meters above sea level, built in 1761.
At midday the village was deserted. It’s only towards the evening that life starts here. Old and young people enjoy their time together in the restaurants, bars or simply on a park bench. They talk and laugh, eat and drink.
The older people try to get into conversation with us. They gesticulate with their hands and feet, some of the younger ones can speak English. It is wonderful to be in the midst of the villagers, talking, drinking and having fun with them, even if you only understand a little of what they are saying.
There are beautiful old houses. Some look like ruins, some have been spruced up.
Many houses in the old village are abandoned, look pretty run-down, are empty, almost every second house/flat is for sale.
Nevertheless, there are a few small supermarkets or vegetable stores, small butchers, bakeries. Small stores where you can buy drugstore items, pharmacies, small hairdressers, a medical center, dentist, stores for clothes, handicrafts and much more. You can actually get everything here. They are just small, cozy stores.
Just village stores 😉
It’s really easy to get lost in the many small alleyways. Somehow, many things look the same in the old town center. The advantage is that you can reach your destination quite quickly, even if you take a small detour, as the village is quite small and can be walked through in a short time.
As many small alleyways as there are, it feels like there are also stairs leading up and down.
In this small village, there is also a small petrol station on the premises of the San Isidro oil mill, Periana’s oil factory.
The Verdial olive of Axarquia, an exclusive variety, grows in the region, with the municipality of Periana being the center of this unique variety with over 90%.
The characteristics of this extraordinary olive, combined with the climate, produce an oil that is unique in the world.
Periana was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1884.
Church bells can be heard here all the time. You get the feeling that they are being pushed by the wind.
Sitting here, listening to the wind and hearing the church bells softly in the background, you feel like you’re in the Wild West in a rocking chair on the veranda 🙂 🙂
All you can really hear in the midday silence is the wind and the ringing of the bells.
The new development area on the other side of the village.
