02.11.-08.11.2025 Figueira/Budens, Portugal-Algarve

This week we went on our first trip with our KTM.
After a short ride, we were pulled over by the police. For quite some time, we had been passing cyclists coming the other way. Now the police officer told us in all seriousness that we should take a break here and wait until the few thousand cyclists had passed.
We really wondered why this route wasn’t closed or why there weren’t at least any signs indicating the race.
Cyclists and police kept passing by nonstop. At least all the police officers greeted us very friendly.

Our actual destination was Mount Foia. We like to go there for coffee, cake, and to enjoy the great view.

In the meantime, I have collected a few medronhos, the fruits of the strawberry tree.

After about an hour, a service vehicle stopped beside us. We politely asked if we could continue driving.
After getting the OK from the two friendly men and promising to drive slowly and keep to the far right, we drove on for about a kilometer before being stopped by another police officer. However, he simply told us to drive carefully and be considerate of cyclists.

At some point, we finally reached our actual destination.

At 902 meters, Fóia is the highest mountain in the Serra de Monchique, located in southern Portugal in the Algarve region. It offers spectacular panoramic views across the entire region, all the way to the Atlantic coast.

Our walk to the sea at the beginning of the week was quite stormy.

The wind was a bit chilly, but a T-shirt was still enough.

The wind came directly from the sea and brought stronger waves and a current that should not be underestimated. So swimming was out of the question.

Currently, it is quite cool here in the mornings and evenings as soon as the sun goes down. The humidity at night is also quite high.
It probably won’t be long before we need to turn on the heating from time to time. The nice thing is that it is still warm enough during the day to wear shorts and a T-shirt and you can even swim in the sea.

This ancient water source dates back to a time long past.
The old well, known as the thousand-year-old spring, still provides fresh water to all who need it. The well has a large, rectangular trough for cattle, made of red sandstone, known as Silves sandstone. You can see the grooves in the stone basin, which were made by sharpening axe blades. The last restoration of the Fonte Milenar took place in 1982.
We now also get our drinking water from this well, which is not far from our camper site.

Finally, pizza from the oven again. We treated ourselves to a ceramic grater. You can use it to make delicious bruschetta or grate garlic, ginger, nutmeg, nuts, lemon, and much more.
I tried my hand at making a tomato sauce for the pizza. It turned out really tasty 😋

Short evening walk with a break at the beach.
