02.07.2023 from Asilah to Moulay Abdeslam/Morocco

After breakfast, we only drove about 80 km inland from the coast.
To Moulay Abdeslam.

The roads so far have been surprisingly good. Sometimes a bit narrow and, as they would say in Germany, “the hard shoulders are not passable”. A pothole here and there and some gravel towards the end. However, they are in the process of improving this road.

We also came across a few animals. Sheep, cows, wild dogs and even a few camels wandering around in the fields.

Here are a few impressions of our trip today.

We arrived at our accommodation, the “guest house Abou Hachem”, at around 11:45 am and were warmly welcomed by Moustapha. We stay here for 2 nights.

The room we were offered looked more like it was occupied by the host himself. A very nice room, typical of the country, with four small sofas and a single bed. The toilet and shower are outside and are shared.

We didn’t mind and agreed. We found the price per night reasonable, the people here are very nice and everything looks lovingly decorated. The host Moustapha kept mentioning that our belongings were safe here. We can leave everything anywhere, nothing gets lost here. It’s all just family and a vacation worker is here.

We only found out later that a larger room with its own bathroom would be available tomorrow and that we could move there.
We are excited.

We were greeted with the traditional Moroccan drink, peppermint tea

For us, it was completely unusual and took some getting used to that we were totally spoiled.
Around 2:30 pm we had something to eat.
So lovingly prepared and traditional cuisine. With various salads, soup and the typical tajine, fresh spring water and coffee.

Afterwards, the young vacation worker gave us a guided tour to the water source with a short walk through the area and back to the guest house. This region is very green. Lots of ferns and cork oaks grow here. Today we got a completely different picture of Morocco than we had always imagined.

Tipping plays a very important role in Morocco. In a hotel, you should give the chambermaid, waiter or porter between 3 and 15 dirhams. 10 dirhams is about 1 euro.
In restaurants you usually give 10%.
For small services of any kind, even for directions, you should give between 1 and 5 dirhams. For a small tour like the one we got today, you can give 10 dirhams or a little more if you were satisfied. We opted for 20 dirhams because it was a wonderful little tour.

As we drove, we kept seeing these mountain water springs where the locals filled up their water supplies.
The water tastes really delicious and is pleasantly cool.

The mountain village of Abdeslam.

Everyone is very proud of this Australian chicken.

Cooking is sometimes done outdoors here.

Now it’s time to process the impressions.
